Fixed industrial robots have transformed the manufacturing space over the last several decades, with well-documented benefits such as improved productivity and error reduction. Now, robots are taking the next evolutionary step by interacting with humans. Once relegated by physical barriers, robots can start to partner with humans thanks to the development of autonomous mobile robots and cobots.
Human-Robot Interaction Means Better Productivity for Manufacturers
Although AMRs and cobots don't have to operate behind fences, safety remains a top concern. Cobots are still bound by an area scanner and a sensor, shutting down when people get too close. Industry executives expect the next generation of cobots to work directly with humans because of the robots' advanced sensors and adaptive safety systems.
These safety systems also can help manage the unpredictability of humans in busy environments. One maker of safety systems uses 3D sensors on traditional fenced robots to detect humans and slow down or stop accordingly. An automotive manufacturer that deployed the sensors saw a 25% reduction in downtime and 15% boost in productivity. Other pilot projects in human-robot collaboration include the transport of freight carts and handling of medical samples in a laboratory.
To make people feel more comfortable in this new collaborative environment, robot and component manufacturers are designing products with friendly faces and human-like movements. Expect the next generation of products to be driven by AI, whether that means easy integration of a robot into a work environment or the processing of sensor data in real time to make split-second decisions for safety and efficiency.
